Elizabeth learns to read in her 70s

Never too old to learn

NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN!

Petite and always cheerful, Elizabeth Bernadette Phillips knows the secret of a long, happy life – she just keeps busy and doing for others.  She volunteers for the Red Cross at all the big sporting meets like the Two Oceans, the Big Walk and the Argus Cycle Tour.  Her hands are as supple as a young girl’s and she still gives massages to those whose legs are swollen or aching with rheumatism.

Always game for everything, Elizabeth goes on every outing on offer and she continues with her Red Cross involvement - as quartermaster, she takes register for the commandant at their Tuesday evening classes.  She has been living at Neighbourhood Old Age Homes (NOAH) in Woodstock for 14 years.

At the age of 78, Elizabeth is still learning - to read and write!  She goes to ‘school’ at Marylane Convent in Hanover Park.  “I have been studying for four years now and my certificates are on my wall,” she says proudly. “Now I can read from the Bible at last!”
