We are lucky to have committed donors who give what they can, when they can. But making ends meet is a constant struggle and the need for our services is ever-increasing.

Although the government provides small grants and basic health care for the elderly, inequalities are still stark. Over-subscribed State services are stretched to breaking point.

As our country wrestles with the breakdown of social structures – exacerbated by the AIDS pandemic – the elderly are amongst the first casualties.

With unemployment at a staggeringly high rate, it is often older people who are left supporting whole families on their small pensions. And abuse and neglect of the elderly is on the increase.

An alarming number of older people in the Western Cape simply have nowhere to go.
