— HOME —
NOAH has 11 communal homes for 107 fit, independent social pensioners in the greater Cape Town area. These are ordinary houses in ordinary streets where the residents share responsibility for the smooth-running of the home. They pay a monthly rental of R140 and strive to keep utilities’ costs as low as possible.
Thanks to these services, NOAH residents are able to live with security, eat nutritiously and meet their health and other basic needs with dignity and respect, on R1690 per month. With the help of donors and sponsors, NOAH ensures that the houses are well maintained, comfortable, safe and compliant spaces. All houses have water tanks, solar panels and alarm systems. The houses are situated in Woodstock, Maitland, Athlone, Atlantis, Elsies River and Ida’s Valley.
The subsidy from the Western Cape Provincial Department of Social Development makes the model more sustainable and, apart from the initial capital outlay and ongoing maintenance, a very viable way of tackling an enormous housing challenge. Because of the affordability and security of tenure, NOAH has a waiting list. We therefore have an urgency regarding the replication of the model if we are to address the critical housing shortage. This replication work forms the major part of our advocacy and lobbying work.
