Our elderly are the most at risk
South Africa is currently unable to support the 3,1 million social pensioners whose sole income is R1,780 per month, let alone in the face of an unprecedented pandemic.
Nowhere can anyone provide for all their needs, including shelter, clothing, food and health, on this amount of money. Yet 74% share their pension with other members of their household and are also caring for their grandchildren who are now at home with them.
Many of our members have compromised immune systems, chronic conditions and, due to grinding poverty, live in overcrowded situations.
Following regulations, we have sadly had to close our community centres in Khayelitsha and Woodstock to contain the spread. All of our members have received the necessary information and have been asked to share it with their families and communities and to stay at home.
This is a bleak scenario for our 75 Khayelitsha members who rely on a nutritious daily meal without which their health would be compromised. They need it to take their medication.
Help us ensure their food security by paying towards a daily balanced meal which costs R15 and will be delivered to them.
Our appeal to you is not a ‘nice to have’. Right now, our people risk dying and we are doing everything in our power to prevent that from happening.
Please help us.
